Etiquette in the treatment room
How to Make the Most of Your Session

At Geelong Bowen and Remedial Therapies, we believe that a successful treatment experience goes beyond just the techniques we use. It’s about creating a respectful, calm, and professional environment that enhances your healing. Once you step into the treatment room, following a few simple etiquette guidelines will help ensure that your session is as effective and enjoyable as possible.

Here’s how to make the most of your time once you’re in the treatment room.

1. Settle In and Communicate Your Needs

As soon as you enter the treatment room, take a moment to settle in. We’ll begin by discussing your specific concerns, treatment goals, and any areas of tension or discomfort. It’s important to be open about what’s bothering you, whether it’s a specific injury, chronic pain, or just areas where you feel tight. The more we know, the better we can tailor your treatment to address your needs. If there’s anything you’d like us to focus on or avoid, let us know. This allows us to provide a treatment that works best for you.

2. Be Comfortable and Relaxed

We want you to feel comfortable throughout the session, so make sure you’re in a relaxed position on the treatment table. Whether you’re lying face up or face down, use pillows or props provided to support your body in a way that feels natural. If you ever feel uncomfortable or if you need to adjust your position, feel free to let us know. If you have any sensitivities or injuries that require special positioning, just speak up, and we’ll ensure that you’re fully supported.

3. Respect Your Therapist’s Process

During your session, we may use a variety of techniques to address the affected areas. Some methods may feel more intense, while others will be gentler. It’s important to communicate with us throughout the treatment. If the pressure feels too much or not enough, just let us know, and we’ll adjust it to suit your needs.
Your comfort is our top priority, and we’ll always collaborate with you to ensure the pressure and techniques are perfect for you.

4. Minimise Distractions

Once the treatment starts, it’s important to stay focused on your body and the sensations you’re experiencing. If you feel relaxed and quiet, your body will respond better to the treatment, making it more effective. If you need to speak or ask questions, feel free to, but try to keep conversations focused on your treatment.
We also ask that you keep your phone turned off or on silent to avoid any distractions during the session. This helps maintain a calm, quiet environment conducive to relaxation and healing.

5. Let Go and Focus on Breathing

As your treatment progresses, we encourage you to focus on your breathing. Deep, steady breaths can help release muscle tension and promote a sense of calm. As we work through tight spots or areas of discomfort, try to let go of any stress or tension you might be holding in your body. Breathing deeply and regularly will help maximise the therapeutic effects of the session.
Don’t worry about “doing” anything – simply breathe and let us guide you through the experience.

6. Pay Attention to Your Body’s Response

During the session, take note of how your body responds to the treatment. If something feels particularly sore, tight, or tender, let us know. While some discomfort may be expected during certain techniques (especially for deep muscle work), it’s important to differentiate between good soreness and pain that feels too intense. If you feel sharp pain or discomfort that feels wrong, we will stop and adjust the technique immediately.

7. Aftercare and Post-Treatment Advice

Once your treatment is finished, we’ll take a moment to discuss any aftercare advice, such as stretches, hydration recommendations, or self-care tips to aid in your recovery. These tips are designed to help you get the most benefit from your session and continue your healing at home. Sometimes, you may experience some mild soreness after deep tissue work, but this is completely normal. However, if the discomfort persists, please don’t hesitate to contact us for further guidance.

By following these simple tips once you’re in the treatment room, you’ll help us create an environment that’s conducive to healing and relaxation. We’re here to help you feel your best, and these small adjustments can go a long way in enhancing your overall experience.

We look forward to seeing you at your next session!
